Turner Sims Concert Hall | Southampton University

Turner Sims opened in 1974 at the University of Southampton’s Highfield campus, built following a bequest from Miss Margaret Grassam Sims in 1967. The hall was specifically designed to provide Southampton with a dedicated concert venue capable of hosting serious classical music programming.

The venue holds approximately 400 people with every seat offering excellent sight lines and access to the hall’s renowned acoustics. The acoustics were specifically designed by staff from the Institution of Sound and Vibration Research and have been so valued that the BBC regularly uses Turner Sims for professional recordings.

Turner Sims hosts over 60 concerts annually, ranging across classical, jazz, folk, indie, and world music. The programming demonstrates ambition and range – audiences encounter both internationally renowned performers (Courtney Pine, Nicola Benedetti, Hugh Masekela, Vienna Piano Trio) and emerging artists.

The venue’s location within the university grounds provides a particular character – it’s embedded in academic culture while remaining open to the public. This positioning has made Turner Sims influential in Southampton and the broader region’s cultural scene.
