1865 at 1-3 Cumberland Place takes its name from the year Southampton was granted city status, though the venue itself is a product of the 2010s independent music circuit rather than Victorian history. The room holds around 700 standing and has become the standard stop for touring acts at the mid-level of the UK circuit – bands that have outgrown pub venues but are not yet at the Guildhall scale.

The booking policy covers rock, indie, metal, folk, and alternative music with a consistency that distinguishes the venue from the more opportunistic booking at comparable venues.
