The Pig in the Wall | Southampton Old Town

Built into the medieval city wall itself, The Pig in the Wall is 12 rooms of deliberate boutique character - junk-shop furniture, a serious deli bar, and masonry that dates back to the 12th century.

A Hotel Inside the City Wall

The Pig in the Wall occupies a building that incorporates the actual medieval city wall – 12th-century stonework that was built to defend Southampton from French raids is now the backdrop for a boutique hotel bar. That context sets the tone for everything here: this is a place with genuine history, not a new-build doing shabby-chic for effect.

The 12 rooms are individually styled, all running with the Pig group’s signature aesthetic – salvaged furniture, raw plaster, fat candles, properly stocked minibars. The rooms vary in size; the smaller ones are genuinely compact, so check the layout before booking if space matters. Beds are comfortable and the linen is high quality.

The Deli Bar

The deli bar downstairs is the centrepiece and worth visiting even if you’re not staying. It runs all day with charcuterie boards, cheese plates, sourdough, and a wine list weighted toward natural and low-intervention bottles. The cocktails are considered and the bar staff know what they’re talking about. Weekend evenings it fills with people who live nearby as much as guests.

Breakfast is served in-house – proper eggs, good bread, local sourcing throughout. The Pig group takes food seriously across all their properties and this one is no different despite the smaller scale.

Location

Westgate Street puts you in the Old Town, which is where Southampton’s most interesting bars and independent restaurants concentrate. God’s House Tower, the Bargate, and the Tudor House are all within walking distance. The cruise terminals are a 12-minute walk. For anyone who wants character over amenity count, this is the obvious Southampton choice.

Rates from £120-£200 per night. Book direct through the Pig website for the best rates.
