The Hobbit at 19 Bevois Valley Road, in the neighbourhood between the city centre and the university, is one of Southampton’s most recognisable pubs. The Tolkien theme – hobbit holes built into the bar, character names on the cocktail menu, murals of Middle Earth scenes on the walls – has been in place since the 1980s and has outlasted multiple changes in ownership and fashion. The theme is thorough enough to be a deliberate aesthetic choice rather than a surface dressing.

The proximity to the University of Southampton campus means the clientele is predominantly student and young professional. The pub is not exclusively a student pub in the way that some city pubs become but the association is clear. The pricing reflects this: draught beer and cocktails are priced at or below city centre average. The selection of themed cocktails – Gandalf’s Staff, Treebeard, various others – are better than the names suggest.

The Hobbit ran into legal difficulties with the Tolkien estate regarding the themed name and decor, and was required to resolve the trademark issue. This generated significant publicity in the early 2010s and the pub emerged from the dispute intact. Bevois Valley Road has a concentration of independent bars and restaurants that complement the Hobbit. The area is walkable from the city centre in about fifteen minutes and well served by buses.
