Kids Days Out Southampton – SeaCity, Solent Sky and More

Southampton offers genuinely good days out for families - and several of the best ones are free. SeaCity Museum and Solent Sky are the starting points.

01 Seacity

SeaCity Museum

SeaCity Museum in the Civic Centre is the definitive starting point for a family day in Southampton. The Titanic exhibition is the draw – and it genuinely delivers on the promise. Real artefacts, personal stories, a Southampton focus that takes the city’s central role in the Titanic’s story seriously rather than treating it as a tourist commodity. The wider maritime history galleries hold up well beyond the Titanic rooms. Entry is paid but reasonable; the under-fives are free.

02 Solent

Solent Sky Museum

Solent Sky on Albert Road South houses a collection of aircraft including the Supermarine Spitfire – which was designed and built in Southampton. For children with any interest in aircraft or aviation history, it’s an outstanding afternoon. The Spitfire connection gives the museum a unique hook that justifies the visit even for non-specialists. The volunteers who staff the exhibits are often ex-aviation and their knowledge adds a dimension that fixed panels can’t replicate. Entry is modest.

03 Southampton

Southampton Common

The Common is 147 hectares of open space in the middle of the city – big enough that it absorbs whatever number of people turn up on a sunny weekend. The paddling pool is a summer institution. The play areas are well-maintained. The Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre on the Common is free and handles the question of what to do with curious eight-year-olds about wildlife with genuine competence. The Common costs nothing.

04 Tudor

Tudor House and Garden

Tudor House and Garden in the Old Town is a medieval merchant’s house with an extraordinary history and a garden that children find accessible. The story of the building spans 500 years of Southampton life. Entry is free for under-16s. The combination of the Tudor House with the nearby Medieval Merchant’s House and God’s House Tower can fill a half-day in Southampton’s Old Town without spending much.

05 Practical

Practical Family Tips

The Waterfront and the marina at Ocean Village give children free access to boats and the water without needing to get on anything. The Southampton to Hythe ferry – a short trip across Southampton Water – is affordable and gives children the experience of a proper boat crossing. Combine it with a walk around Hythe village for a full day out that costs under £20 for a family of four.
