Best Swimming Pools in Southampton

Southampton has a reasonable public swimming infrastructure for a city of its size. Here's where to go for lane swimming, leisure, and outdoor options.

Swimming in Southampton means mostly leisure centres and hotel pools – there’s no Lido culture of outdoor swimming that some cities have developed, but the indoor provision is solid. Here’s what’s actually available and worth using.

01 Everyone

Everyone Active – Quays Leisure Centre

The Quays Leisure Centre in the city centre is Southampton’s largest public aquatic facility. It has a 50-metre pool (rare in the UK and genuinely significant for serious lap swimmers and competitive training), a 25-metre learner pool, a wave pool, flumes, and a health suite. Operated by Everyone Active on behalf of the city council, it’s the anchor of public swimming in Southampton.

Lane swimming sessions run throughout the day. Adult entry is typically £5.50–£7 per swim, with leisure centre membership bringing this down to around £2–£3 effective cost per swim for regular users. The 50-metre pool means serious swimmers can actually get meaningful training in without turning every 25 metres.

02 Bitterne

Bitterne Leisure Centre

Bitterne has a 25-metre pool serving the eastern side of the city. It’s a well-used community facility with a consistent lane swimming programme, family sessions, and an adult-only early morning swim that draws the working commuter swimmer market. Prices are in line with the Quays.

03 University

University of Southampton

The Highfield campus sports centre has pool facilities open to the public. The university pool is well maintained and the booking system is reliable. Prices are competitive and the early morning slots are available before the student population peaks.

04 Hotel

Hotel Pools

Several city hotels offer day pass access to their pools for non-residents. Southampton Harbour Hotel, Novotel West Quay, and Chilworth Manor all have pools accessible on a day membership or spa day basis. These are heated to leisure rather than training temperatures – good for relaxation, not optimal for serious lap work.

05 Open

Open Water

Southampton Water and the Solent are accessible but cold and have significant shipping traffic – not suitable for casual open water swimming. The nearest managed open water swimming venues are at Fleet Pond (Fleet, 45 minutes) and some reservoir venues in the New Forest area that run organised open water sessions from spring through autumn.
