SeaCity Museum | Southampton

SeaCity Museum opened on 10 April 2012 to mark the centenary of the RMS Titanic’s departure from Southampton. The museum is housed in the Grade II* listed Civic Centre building, which previously served as the magistrates’ court and police station. This architectural heritage provides authentic context for contemporary museum practice.

The permanent exhibitions are structured around two core themes. “Southampton’s Titanic Story” explores the tragedy through the eyes of the crew – the majority of whom listed Southampton as their address. The exhibition features an interactive model of the Titanic, recorded messages from passengers of that fateful night, original objects recovered from the wreck, and a preserved courtroom using audiovisual elements to re-enact scenes from the British inquiry.

“Gateway to the World” examines Southampton’s broader historical role as a hub for human migration – a city through which millions passed en route to new lives. This exhibition contextualizes the Titanic narrative within Southampton’s longer history as a maritime center.

A third space houses rotating temporary exhibitions, allowing the museum to respond to contemporary interests while maintaining thematic coherence. The museum is free to enter, making maritime and local history accessible to all.
